HIGH
SCHOOL PREPARATION PROGRAMME
The High School Preparation Programme is offered at our central campus
in Carlton and at Box Hill, one of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
Courses can be arranged from two weeks to forty-eight weeks. Some
students enrol in short courses during their own school vacation period,
but most enter a longer programme which is specifically designed to
prepare them for secondary schooling in Victoria. It is possible to
start a programme at any time of the year. The school operates throughout
the year and is open during the normal school holiday period.
The programme
aims to prepare students for full integration into a Victorian secondary
school. Thus, there are many aspects of the programme apart from
the teaching of English:
• All
students are expected to wear a simple uniform, as uniform is compulsory
in almost every school in Victoria.
• Student behaviour is carefully monitored and the rules are
enforced. Students who consistently break the rules will be carefully
counselled and
disciplined if necessary. Any serious breach of the rules will be
reported to the parent through the student’s agent.
• All students will take part in a sports programme twice
a week. Playing sport is compulsory in most schools in Victoria.
• Students attend regular excursions as part of their studies.
• Students are taught research and study skills, which are
so necessary in the Victorian school classroom.
• All students must adhere to established homework policies
to meet high school practices.
• Students learn to prepare for exams and the Victorian Certificate
of Education.
• The English language is taught with special attention to
other important subjects in the school curriculum such as mathematics,
the sciences and
information technology. Specialist teachers in these subjects are
available each week.
On arrival at
Melbourne Language Centre, the student is given a placement test,
which is used to place the student in the correct class. Every four
weeks each student is assessed and will be promoted to the next
class when appropriate. At the end of eight weeks a comprehensive
report is prepared and distributed to each student, the agent and
pathway school. It is hoped that a student would achieve at least
a ‘3+’ mark in each of ‘Speaking’, ‘Listening’,
‘Reading’ and ‘Writing’ in readiness for
secondary school.
An important
area of service offered by the Centre is the assistance that we
can give to the parent who is looking for a school for their student
to attend. We have agreements with an extensive range of both Independent
and Government schools in Melbourne and can assist parents in applying
for entry to these schools. The Principal and Staff are always happy
to assist parents in this manner. We can arrange for, and accompany
students to visit schools when making their choice. The Principal
has regular and on-going communication with our pathway schools
and can help to make the transition of the student smooth and stress-free.
The High School Preparation Course is specifically tailored
for the needs of students who will attend secondary schools in Australia.
Language skills are taught with concentration on the subject areas
students will study in Secondary education including mathematics,
the sciences, and Information Technology. The culture of the school
prepares students for a successful transition to Secondary education
and includes uniforms, attendance monitoring, discipline, sport, excursions,
homework, research and study skills. Reports are produced regularly
and we liase with the student’s pathway school to ensure the
transition to a new country and culture is successful.
